‘Help I'm Broke! The Debt Counselor' (original title Rausch Aus Den Schulden) delivers ratings far above the channel average on a weekly basis in Germany and Greece.
In Germany, RTL has recently commissioned their seventh series and in Greece, ALPHATV has just started production of their fourth series.

It always is a frustrating and emotional experience to witness a family unable to pay their mortgage, health care bill, insurance and other financial obligations. Especially when you learn that is was their own poor financial management and unnecessary purchases that created these financial problems in the first place.

These families need immediate help from the outside; if not, they'll go bankrupt within weeks.

By bringing in the Debt Counselor they can regain structure and insight in their financial status. The Debt Counselor is a financial expert, he's a psychologist, and he's a facilitator between the family and the other parties involved: the trustees, the creditors. He negotiates new payment schedules. He tries to reduce interest payments and align mortgage payments. The Debt Counselor helps the family get back on track but from there on, they have to do it themselves. Painful sacrifices must be made to save the family. What expenses are required? What can be avoided? Where can money be saved? Will Dad have to sell his beloved car? Can the kids keep their cell phones? What about Mom's hobbies? 70% of the participants will make it in the end; they can truly say they've conquered their problems and can start a new life....
